15 Jul Play to Learn: Vietnam’s Heritage Gamification

Vietnam and Gamification
What if exploring ancient villages felt more like a treasure hunt than a tour? In Vietnam, gamified heritage experiences are transforming sightseeing into interactive adventures where travelers don’t just learn about history, they help protect it.
Destination: Đường Lâm, the first ancient village in Việt Nam recognised as a national historical and cultural heritage site in 2006
Organization: Management Board of Đường Lâm Village
Vietnam is increasingly embracing heritage gamification using interactive, game-based tours at cultural sites to encourage responsible travel and deepen tourist engagement with its historical legacy. Rooted in tradition yet powered by modern tech, these initiatives are reshaping how visitors explore Vietnam’s heritage.
At Đường Lâm Ancient Village near Hanoi, tourists use apps to navigate routes, answer site-specific challenges, and collect facts about banyan trees, communal houses, wells, pagodas, shrines, and local sweets. This fosters active learning while preserving and respecting the site’s historical authenticity. Similar “decode-the-code” puzzles at the Hùng Vương Museum engage visitors in role‑playing quests, combining fun with education.
These gamified experiences promote responsible tourism by encouraging mindfulness and respect, reducing passive consumption, and spreading heritage awareness.
Vietnam’s heritage gamification is more than entertainment, it’s a tool for sustainable tourism, turning visitors into stewards of history while ensuring cultural heritage is celebrated and safeguarded for future generations.
