“Both the BARK Ranger and Junior Explorer programs were created to make responsible recreation engaging and meaningful for everyone who wants to explore Marquette County. Whether families teaching their children to care for our trails or pet owners ensuring their dogs leave no trace, these initiatives reflect the community’s shared commitment to preserving Marquette County’s natural beauty and outdoor spaces. By combining education with hands-on experiences, we are helping visitors and locals alike build lasting connections with nature while protecting these environments for generations to come.”

Travel Marquette’s Bark Ranger and Junior Explorer Pass programs show how destination initiatives can make responsible recreation accessible and fun for all ages (and species). By engaging kids and dog owners through hands-on experiences, Travel Marquette transforms environmental stewardship into an active part of exploring the region.

These programs not only educate visitors about Leave No Trace principles but also strengthen community pride in protecting Marquette County’s natural assets. From families earning patches and adventure packs to pups joining the Bark Ranger “pack,” each activity builds awareness and connection through participation.

As Susan Estler (CEO of Travel Marquette) notes, the goal is to blend education with experience, helping travelers and locals alike build meaningful relationships with nature while ensuring Marquette’s outdoor spaces remain pristine for generations to come.
