04 Feb The Esperance Promise: Nudging Travel with Care
The Esperance Promise
City and Country: Esperance, Australia
Organization: The Shire of Esperance, in partnership with regional tourism organisation Australia’s Golden Outback
The Esperance Promise is an initiative designed to support meaningful and responsible tourism in Esperance. The Esperance Promise provides visitors with simple guidance on how to travel responsibly and return home safely. Visitors are invited to pledge adherence to the guidelines that promote environmental stewardship and cultural respect.
The Esperance Promise was created to protect what makes Esperance remarkable, while fostering respectful and positive interactions between visitors and locals. It complements the DMO branding and campaign, “Esperance. In Your Element,” strategically centred on facilitating sustainable tourism development.
Key commitments include staying on marked trails to protect natural habitats, camping only in designated areas to minimize ecological impact, and refraining from feeding or touching wildlife to preserve their natural behaviors. Tourists are encouraged to clean their boots to prevent the spread of weeds and diseases, prepare adequately for four-wheel-drive adventures to ensure safety and respect for the land, and be mindful of ocean conditions to avoid hazards. Additionally, the promise emphasizes the importance of being bushfire aware when enjoying campfires and embracing time away from technology to fully connect with nature.
By making this promise, visitors commit to acting with respect and embracing all elements of the community and environment in Esperance. This strategy educates visitors on how to engage with the destination and increases visitor awareness of responsible travel behavior in Esperance. The Esperance Promise signifies a proactive approach to tourism management, responding to the needs of the destination.
