Killarney bans single-use coffee cups

City and Country: Killarney, Ireland

Organization: Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce

Consumer website

Killarney made headlines by becoming the first in Ireland to ban single-use coffee cups through an innovative opt-in scheme. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own reusable cups or, for a €2 deposit, borrow a locally made reusable cup, which can be returned to participating businesses or kept for future use. With over 70 businesses involved, the initiative ensures that single-use cups are no longer stocked, significantly reducing waste. This effort reflects Killarney’s broader commitment to responsible travel by aligning the local tourism industry with environmentally conscious practices which then encourages visitors to adopt the practices. Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce is a leading destination for being waste wise and encouraging visitors to be good guests.
