Vancouver Island is home to an estimated 7,000 to 12,000 black bears, making it a prime destination for bear watching. To ensure both visitor safety and bear conservation, 4VI (formerly Tourism Vancouver Island) emphasizes responsible travel behavior through established bear viewing best practices (called “For the Bears” and designated experiences to bear watch.

The “For the Bears” guide includes best practices such as avoiding food-conditioning in bears, minimizing disturbance and separation distance, and other helpful tips. The curated and selected experiences on their “Bear Watching” website ensures that tour operators can maintain consistent viewing sites and schedules, minimizing disturbances to bear habitats.

By providing visitors with safe and responsible experiences, more visitors can continuously enjoy observing bears in their natural environments while supporting the sustainability of wildlife tourism on Vancouver Island.
