Managing Visitors to Venice

City and Country: Venice, Italy
Organization: City of Venice

Consumer website

This past summer peak season, Venice trialed a €5 entry fee for day-trippers to combat over-tourism and preserve its historical sites. This move aims to manage the influx of tourists and encourage off-peak travel to reduce pressure on the busiest times of the year. Visitors who stay overnight, children under 14, and residents will be exempt from this fee. The collected funds were directed towards maintaining the city’s landmarks and improving tourist management. The fee is part of broader efforts to ensure a sustainable balance between tourism and conservation. This initiative reflects Venice’s proactive approach to encouraging responsible travel behavior.

The trail ended earlier this summer but the website provides interesting details on the program. Check it out here. We’ll be watching for analysis of the program and will keep you posted on the learnings from this important experiment in managing visitor flows.
