New York City, through its OneNYC strategy, demonstrates how a global destination can integrate sustainability into everyday life. As a leading example of urban stewardship, the city focuses on reducing environmental impact while enhancing the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

NYC encourages green behavior by providing proof that small gestures can improve the quality of life for both NYC residents and visitors.

At the heart of this initiative are clear goals: cutting greenhouse gas emissions, reducing waste, and expanding access to green spaces.

People, either visitors or residents, are encouraged to adopt simple, responsible behaviors throughout their stay.

The Green Guide to NYC provides 10 ways to travel greener and more responsibly:

  • Use public transportation
  • Participate in low- impact tours like biking or walking tours
  • Enjoy the outdoor activities
  • Use reusable water bottles
  • Produce less waste
  • Help make your stays in hotels greener
  • Consume locally grown foods
  • Buy from farmers’ markets
  • Follow the guide in the recycling policy
  •  Visit green landmarks

Along with green initiatives, NYC encourages responsible behavior for outdoor recreation. Visitors are encouraged to follow posted guidelines, stay on designated trails, and be mindful of safety and conservation efforts, especially when resources like waste bins or maintenance services may be limited. Leaving no trace by taking all waste with you helps preserve these natural areas for others to enjoy.

NYC encourages responsible behavior among tourists and locals. The destination provides accessible guidance and practical tools, helping both visitors and locals understand the impact of their choices.
